Sea Lab #28?

I inherited an already operational 55g tank and have had it up and running for over a month now. I have chemical test kits for ammonia and nitrate and everything is within acceptable levels.
The person who gave me the setup used Sea Lab #28 to maintain proper calcium, etc. (roughly 5 tablets until they dissolve, then add more). The more I learn on this site, the more concerned I get with these "one size fits all" type of solutions.

Is this a good product? Should I continue with it or stop? Anyone use this product?

I would stick to water changes for most trace elements and add Calcium to maintain Calcium and Carbonate to maintain ALK.
This will require the purchase and practice of Calcium & ALK test kits.

Thanks. I after reading so much here, that's what I figured. It also seems that it can make your calcium skyrocket according to other posts here.
