wow.. i cant believe the difference! I simply cut about 1/2" of the inner tube in the collection cup off and the bubbles are really piling over.. check this out.. 2 or 3 days worth of collection.
just wanted to post the results for others to see that they arent TOTALLY garbage..

They are not all crappy. I have one and it collects like that. I didn't have to cut anything off. Good job Cain.

You simply cut 1/2" off the inner tube? It looks like you also have a different pump running the thing. What kind is it? Turning that into an in sump skimmer with a lower water level and a bigger pump is why you are pulling that good of skimmate. Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a needle value for your air value and you might see even better results (not that those aren't good already).

oh if ur wondering what that is zip-tied to it, its a low water cut off switch...
made for home sumps, costed me $24 at a local hardware store, and is one of the mercury-free ones!
nice rubber cover, and way too easy to install!
its not a pump.. lol if thats what u were referring to

While seacones may not be thr best choice in skimmers, they can and will work. There are some mods in reducing the height of the inner tube (as you have found out) and the air valve and a few more. I played with one for awhile and it worked just fine. But right out of the box they suck big time. They also work bvetter once modded and used in a sump or in a tank with an ATO as consistent water level plays a big part with them working right.

My question is....why aren't the designers of the seaclone paying attention to all these mods and redesign the thing accordingly? A shorter inner tube in the collection cup, a shorter inner tube in the middle of the skimmer (this gives the bubbles a longer contact time), a better air value, and if they put a needlewheel pump on it, these would actually be a good skimmer. Most of these mods shouldn't cause the thing to be anymore expensive. Do they not care about the reputation they have? I did all these mods to my seaclone and while my results aren't as good as Cain's, it certainly juiced up the skimmer. I turned the maxijet into a needlewheel by doing the bioball mod. I bet if I had it in a sump, it would be impressive. BTW Cain, I thought the pump on the left side of the picture was hooked up to your seaclone. It looked like a mag pump or something.

because it would cost them money to re-create the molds... and why do that when they dont have to? I emailed them explaining how much of a pos it truely is.. If EVERYONE who owns one does this, maybe they will change the design... and of course.. charge more money for the unit!
what is the bioball mod?? never heard of that one
oh.. thats my ca-1800 return

The bioball mod....you cut a bioball in half, cut the outer ring off and cut the two inner rings out and slip it over the impeller in your maxijet.

This picture shows it on the impeller, but you need to push it all the way up so the white paddles of the impeller are between each bioball tooth. Make sense?
