I know they have to be fed several times a day, so is their any kind of food you could put in an automatic for them?
IMO, it's best to buy seahorses from a LFS, so you can see them, know they are healthy, and witness them eat frozen mysis... However, there are success stories of buying them online, like jcrim. If your LFS doesn't sell seahorses, maybe they can order them. if not, it looks like you have to get them online... but wherever you do buy them from, make sure they have some sort of warranty on them (most do not), as they can be quite expensive.

Those little horses are so cute. I got some fake decor to put in my seahorse tank along with some fake plants. I also found a little reptile dish shaped like a star for a feeding dish. All I need now is a seahorse. I do plan on asking what kind of seahorse it is before I buy because they are just to delicate and expensive to make a stupid mistake on my part.

Sorry kind of a bad pic but this was my first ime posting a pic and it was off of my camera phone. There is some kind of swirly plastic plant, a mermaid, and a peice of fake purple LR with a pink peice of coral on it.

It was actually cheaper for me to buy mine at the LFS than online. Go figure. Redmon, you might want to add some live rock to that tank also.

I do plan on adding more LR. What else would you say for hitching posts. It is getting pretty full in there. Afer I add what LR I want I don't think I will have much more room for anything else as far a hitching post unless you guys can think of anything that will sit on the LR.

fake corals can sit on the LR, as long as you can secure them. The fake plants can sit on, or in the LR as well. I'll have to get a pic of my tank to show you...

OK. You can't realy see it all that great but the mermaid has a harp that the serhorse could grab and there is a fake coral that is coming up behind her also. How many hitching post do you suggest to have for 2 seahorse?

do you plan on only ever having two in that tank? If so, then you're fine. I figured you'd want more. But it's nice to have a variety, so they don't have to stay in the same tank for a while.

ooohhh!!! i want a porcelain crab too!!! i can't wait to get one... but my lfs never has them, and ordering one offline is stupid - $9 for the crab, but a $75 minimum purchase price, and $30 in shipping!!! that's wayyyy too much for me to spend on a crab!!!

That sounds cool. For right now all I want is 2 seahorse. I want to see how I do with them before I jump in over my head. After the 2 seahorse maybey some tank mates about a year down the road. I want some inverts though. A porcelain crab would be cool though.

Jdragunas. Can you ask you lfs to order you one. I know a few places that if you ask them to try and get one in they can order one in??

jhebi,
Is that a reef set up your pony is in? I see fish and corals and it is awesome looking. I know nothing about seahorses, but it would be nice to have 1 if you can put them in a reef set up.
I am not going to try or anything I am just talking. Yours looks very nice though and I just wanted some information on your tank.

my lfs is *****, and they say that "we can request it, but that doesn't guaranty we will get it."
and milo, having seahorses in a reef tank is possible (see jhebi & darth tang as examples), but it's not recommended. Most corals have stinging cells, and seahorses will latch onto anything they can with their tails. They can get stung by the corals, sometime severly enough to kill them. I personally wouldn't put seahorses in a reef tank, but then again, i also won't add emerald crabs or any kind of stars to my FOWLR... i'm just paraniod about it... why would i risk a $60 seahorse? (and it just gives me an excuse to setup another tank as a reef...)

Hey jdragunas. I have had the greatest of luck!!! I now have a porcelain crab and a mandarin dragonet trained to eat frozen. The only bad thing is I don't have any sehorse yet. LFS keeps jerking me around.

awesome!!! I want a mandarin so bad! Are you sure it's actually eating the frozen food? sometimes they'll suck it up but then spit it back out. And i want a porcelain crab!!! I'm so jealous. I just got a new hermit crab, though. He's like 3" around! He's so cute! When i feed the tank, he pushes himself back on his shell, and reaches all of his legs up to catch the food. It reminds me of finding nemo, you know, the crabs at the end... "heyyyy, heyyy"... lol!
