When I purchased my ponies one was a black one and the other a nice golden yellow with black like or orange spots. When I added them to my tank all that was in there was 2 fake plants and a LR piece. Neither seemed to change color to much once added. She got a little lighter then she was in the store and he is a blackish orange like but no drastic change. I will add though that I went with the same set up the LFS had. I loved the black and white sand they used and then of course a few fake plants so both tanks looked about the same.
Okay, so I wrote this the other day obviously while the topic was fresh. I want to add now that I agree it is not a stress thing that causes them to change color. I came home the other night to find 2 yellow seahorses in my tank. Yup, that is right my black male had changed to all yellow! I caught him swimming around my female fluttering his fins and things matching her color. Once I apporoached the tank though he instantly changed colors back to himself like he used to be. There has been no changes for them since purchase or anything to have caused stress. I believe it has something to do more with moods or maybe courting in my case!
