Selfish People!

Well I had a rant yesterday about some things that irked me and that leads me to today's rant. I went off on people hoarding stuff only to sell it on the auction site and this morning I remembered other selfish stuff I saw yesterday. I saw some people, not many mind you but some, buying toys and putting them in a toys for tots box. I mean the nerve of those people to do something like that in braod daylight for everyone to see. Then we know they get to walk around all day with that warm glow in their body knowing that they gave a toy to some unknown kid who may not have gotten a toy at all this Christmas. Especially in these times, they put a $10 toy in that box and were able to feel good about themselves the rest of the day. How rude of some people.
Lovethesea and LionCrazz, JTT, Egill and a couple others who PM'd me about finding a Twilight calendar for my daughter really struck a nerve with me and opened up the spirit of Christmas in me. Because LTS was so kind and went out and got me a calendar I am going out right now and buying two toys to put in the toys for tots boxes for her.
If you do something selfish like this, post it here, maybe if enough of us post here we will get others to do something selfish also. I used to do the toys for tots where I worked and nothing made me happier than when someone who had never given before would ask questions about what toy to buy, to wrap it or not. That way I knew that there was at least one extra kid would be getting a toy for Christmas.
BTW I know this will be one of those fart in church threads (I have a lot of those) so I will bump this up later myself when I get back.
Merry Christmas!

You mean they actually skipped their Latte's and bought a toy instead? I have never heard of such people!

Difficult to have faith in MANKIND sometimes my friend, especially when you sell $10 twilight calendars and buy up the whole lot and see them on EFLAY for $40...
Stories like this give me a flicker of hope!

Not sure I understand this thread but I will give it a shot.
I was selfish and took some coats, shoes, boots to the outreach center I work for so I could feel a little better about getting to come home to a warm place to sleep .

I am so selfish and hate animals and abused women. That must be why I weekly give donations to the animal shelter, and donate all sorts of awesome stuff to the womens shelter whenever I need more room in my closet, which is often!

No problem telling you this is probably one of my favorite threads ever in the Aquarium.
I always encouraged my students to travel overseas to get a better idea how good they had life. Its just too easy in America these days to ignore the needs of those around us.

well, thanks Scott, you just made me spend 10 minutes crying.

(don't worry, it was probably due, considering the stress at home and now I actually feel better
)
I think what we are doing is paying it forward.......thanks for sharing that, it makes me feel good that a few kids will have a good Christmas. Mine, yours and those less fortunate. Even a quarter thrown into the Salvation Army kettle helps. Heck I even asked a lady in a wheel chair if she needed help with something when she was looking at the top shelf at Wal Mart. She blessed and thanked me. That was free.

My kids school (Catholic) make the grades 5-8 go to our soup kitchen downtown every year. (talk about rough). They hate it at first. I actually have our kids go a few extra times during the year and they don't seem to mind anymore.

Well the other day I got hit up at walmart. I got the typical story, driving between my home in east texas and the military hospital. To get treated for prostate cancer. And well we have food and treatment but don't have the gas to get back home. But this frail man helped me put the groceries in the car. What blew me away is that this guy had the guts to look me in the eye the entire time. So i told him to get into the car and went to his car and picked him up a tank of gas and sure enough he was telling the truth. Go figure.

I hate old people. This old fart had the nerve to call me and ask if he could come on my property and pick up twigs and sticks b/c he is out of firewood, and he has no heat in the house for his family because he can't afford the gas this year. So instead, I rounded up a few of my Boyscouts and their parents, did a little work, and was able to deliver him 4 1/2 loads of wood, and collected the $800 he needed to fill up the propane tank. Stinkin' old people...

In October 2000 my 16 year old son was murdered in a pizza store robbery.
http://apse.dallasnews.com/contest/2...ure.first.html
From this my wife and I had the nerve to ask people that wanted to buy flowers or contribute to something to do it to a local Community Foundation in Justin's name. We have earmarked most of the money to go to an endowment that awards scholarships to local high school students that want to continue their education in the police science-criminal justice areas. We have also bought equipment and donated it to the New Baltimore Police department to start a program called the Justin Mello Kid Print Program. This program sends a police officer, the equipment, and my wife to our local grade schools to produce identification cards that have all of the pertinent information , name height weight hair color etc., a picture and a finger print along with the police departments phone number on it. This is designed to help parents in the event their child comes up missing. According to the police it is always hard for a parent to have composure at that time and give them the correct stats for the police to work off of. This card does that. The information is also contained in a data base at the police station so the parent can call in and the police can immediately pull up the information and get it out to the officers in the field and use it in an Amber alert if necessary. This is all free to the parents and the cards are updated every year.
So from the murder of my son, I hope we have done something to help keep other children in our city a little safer.
The nerve of us!!!!!

Unbelievable spanko...I'm glad to hear that you are doing something positive out of something so negative.
I'm a little confused. This happened in 2000, but this article was just written. This has still not gone to trial?

No that article was written soon after the murder. The three boys in the article turned out not to be the ones that did it. They did find the murderers and they were convicted of this murder, one in Virginia and one in Florida. Currently they are serving life in Virginia, if they ever get out for some reason they serve life in Florida, if they ever get out of there for some reason the serve life in Michigan. It took five years to find and convict the real murderers.
Thank you bigarn and T. We did feel we had to do something to help us get over the grief and to help the children in our community be a little safer.

Well heck, you all made me feel good. I had kind of a tough day today, so the Christmas light I had going in me this morning was more of a spark. But heck reading all these stories really stoked up that old fire again.
You all are cool!
