What size is the overflow? I would say yeah to much pump and would be waste to throttle it down for that, you'd choke it.....You might want to look at something like the Sequence Wahoo or Tarpoon something in the 1500gph range and down a bit.......Again throttling something back on this pump won't be as much......

no as long as you do as stated. you would have to bring it down quite a bit.
IMO by the pump and use it as a closed loop on that tank and call it a day.
