If u use the hob filter.if u can get a used cartridge from a healthy tank it will help your cycle greatly. Its how I cycle my new tanks which are becoming too often lol. The bacteria that build up in them is essentially what your trying to build up in a new tank. I must stress tho only from a healthy tank bc anything in that tank will be in yours!. It generally results in a soft cycle where nothing spikes terribly high. Just an idea

When I first set up my 36g I put about 4 inches of water in the tank to start. Then I added the sand. Then I tried the old trick of putting a plate on top of the sand then adding the rest of the water. It still got a little cloudy but it drastically cut down the clearing time.
neat trick. did you mix your water let the salinaty settle then add the rest after adding the sand

I mixed the water in a 35g bucket. After it mixed for 24hrs then I put about 4 inches of the mixed water in the tank so that when I put the sand in it decreased the die off. After adding the sand then I put the plate in and added the water a gallon at a time till it was almost full, let it set for a couple of hours, then turned on the HOB. The next morning the water was clean. Then I added the rock and started the cycling with a shrimp wrapped in a piece of nylon.
