I would look at tek t5 lights - 6 bulb. that is plenty of light for most everything.
Do you plan on a sump/fuge?
I would add a couple of powerheads, either maxijets or koralia's

I have a 58 gal for my seahorses and its a nice size tank.

yea i plan on a setting up a refugium with a skimmer but how big should i go?? i have seen refugiums that are almost show tanks themselves. is this a bad idea...should i go for just function and does making an aesthetically pleasing fuge hurt its performance?
also, how many watts should i aim for and what is a baseling flow rate per gallon? i was thinking about a wavemaker system but havent done much research on that part yet.

Being from Boulder (Colorado)you have a huge reef community use it. There are alot of good deals there. People are taking down their tanks all the time.
If you want a 36" tank(reef) look into a 40g breeder. With t-5s you can have anything and wont have to worry about the heat of mh. Also make the fuge as big as your space allows you to.
