Here in my question. I want to keep a QT tank for emergencies. But I dont have a place for another tank. I was thinking I'd get a 20 gallon and set it up when I need it. If I keep it with out sand and move some rocks from my main tank to the QT tank when needed would I be OK? Or is this bad?

You don't need to add live rock, just got a sponge filter and some pvc so the fish has a place to hide and you can put the sponge in your sump or refugium if you have one. Then add the water to the QT when you do a water change from you display tank. Or course you need a heater.

If the fish is going to be there for several weeks then wont it need the rock to process ammonium...
