Setting up my first QT tank, have some ?'s...

I am getting ready to setup a 10gallon QT tank. I am new to this and have some questions.
First, is it ok to go bare bottom, or better to go with live sand, or really doesn't matter either way?
I understand I should have some PVC pipe for them to hide. Also, try to keep the water identical to my regular tank. But with that said do I need any live rock in the QT, if so should I have 10 pounds or so?
Last thing is do I need a powerhead in such a small tank, i was thinking of just doing a air pump for oxygenation, but maybe that's just not needed, looking for help and opinions...? Oh, and how long after it's setup do I need to wait until I can add fish?
Thanks,
Will

Hey Will,
No sand or live rock. Just the tank, the HOB filter, a small heater and powerhead (yes, you need one for movement), and some PVC to hide in. You can use fake decoration if you wish. You have to cycle it like any other tank. Drop a piece of raw shrimp in there and pull it out when the ammonia spikes to 1.0ppm

Will...there are also some nice threads in the 'disease' archive files that you may wish to read and reference back to, as needed about QTs. I also suggest you either cover the outside glass surface on the bottom and back minimally, and two short sides ideally (IMHO) with dark paper Or spray flat black paint on those areas (outside only) if this is to be a permanent QT tank. Fish get disoriented/stressed if they see their reflection in every direction and you want to keep the stress minimized.

I would say to be sure the bottom is dark. That is reflective and would be covered in sand in a DT. I have yet to have a fish freak out if the back and sides are not darkened though. Many display tanks, including my own, have white walls behind them.

Thanks for the tips, sounds like no live rock or sand for sure. Only thing I need then is a powerhead and some PVC pipe. I will make sure to cover the bottom for sure and most likely the back and sides as well just to be safe.
