Hello,
I have a 55g and am wondering if there is a site that can explain how I should set this up. Someone told me I need to figure out what size pump etc I need (one not too small/not too big). How do I figure this stuff out?
thanks any help or insite would be awesome

I'm assuming you're talking about a HOB Overflow. Just find out how many GPH (gallons per hour) the overflow can produce and match a pump up with that. If you would like, I can post pics of mine.

My overflow is around 600gph on my 55g, to my 29gal sump. My return pump is a Rio 17hf. It runs at 1090gph, but I have 4.5' of 1" piping that tee's into two return lines. I also run a tee just above the sump pump, that returns back to the sump with a control valve. This will control how much flow is returned to the display tank. My display tank is 42" above the floor. I will attach a pic.

thanks! That gives me an idea. So the pump is what realy controls the GPH? If I wanted lower I would just get a smaller pump? Lets say my overflow is 1200gph.. is that too big? Would you recommend I get a 600gph overflow?
thanks

FYI ...Hang on overflows come in different sizes and number of outlets, Lets say you have 1 one inch pipe leading out. That is one the low side for total flow in a 55 unless PH's are also used in the tank to supplement flow. That would be only around 600 gallon per hour out. But in the same thought 600 GPH is plenty of flow for the sump-fuge setup.
Downsides to a hang one overflow is that they are expensive for good ones and the toilet flushing sounds that some of them make. Some folks have made there own using PVC. There are threads somewhere here showing them.. Good Luck......... Warren
Oops typed it before I saw the last thread you posted. 600 is enough if it has PH's to supplement the flow in your tank. I have a 1200 on my closed loop , but when I push the flow to around 1200 it is loud!

what's the opposite of a HOB overflow? didn't know there was different ones. Yes I have 2 powerheads so I will go with 600gph.
thanks

There are also predrilled aquariums. The over flow is just built on the tank.
