You could use LR from your display to speed up the cycle. Just monitor Amonia levels, if it gets over 1ppm do a water change to get it down otherwise you will be killing off the life on your LR. LR will significantly speed up the process.

no you are going to need to let it cycle.remember the bacteria has to colonize on the glass and filter media its not the water
cycle is over rated!!!

I have had good success with Amquel Plus while a qt cycled.
I agree. I would not attempt to quickly set up a QT tank without having it on hand. A current thread about what to have in your swf medicine cabinet has it as one of the medicines/products that is good to have on hand.
If you go with the advice of not worrying about having a cycled tank then be prepared to do large frequent water changes.

ok QT is up and running. anyone have any tips on catching a yellow tang without taking apart the whole rocks setup
Try catching him when he is sleeping. If he comes to the top to feed then you can be ready with a net. You could move a portion of the rock over, making a space clear to the bottom and then drop a divider when he goes into that area. Just some suggestions. YT's are fast and can squeeze into some narrow areas. You may have to remove some of the rock.
Test your ammonia twice a day. If you notice it creeping up then add the Amquel. You can add a couple of small pieces of rock to the QT, since the medication is not going in there anyway.

What doesn't make sense about it? The way to lower ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels is with a water change. Sometimes larger changes are needed if those readings are high. Where the water comes from does not matter as long as it has been thoroughly mixed and aerated. The biological bacteria colonizes on surfaces. Whether the water is from the display or new makes no difference.

Yes, You will need massive water changes(using new aged water) if you do not have any well cycled tank..Dt, QT or HT unless you have a product like Amquel plus on hand. Also, I do not advocate using using Amquel plus long term or in place of good maintenace/water changes. IMHO it should be used in emergency situations when your nitrogen cycle goes 'beserk' and you do not have some aged water ready to use for a water change.
