SFE Warning!

Well i just thought i should let everyone know that i got a snowflake eel about four days ago
Well the suicidal little {edit language} decided the carpet looked like a more inviting home then the tank. I thought my top was pretty solid too. I could not find the hole he slithered out of. To make a long story short believe what you read about escaping eels and then go even farther to secure that lid. Don't let your new pet end up like my late friend.

Did you try putting him back in? They suprise you sometimes on how close they can be to dead and still come back to life.

Yes, they can produce a mucus to protect them and they can breath as long as their gills are moist.
Sorry for your loss

Yeah i did put him in some water from my tank for a few hours. I read that they will sometimes make it. I didn't hold out much hope though. He was as crispy as a piece of bacon when i found him. It didn't help he decided to jump out at night on the weekend when i like to sleep in. I didn;t even notice he was out until around noon and the last time i saw him alive was like 6pm the previous day

I am so sorry for you loss - I have been there. Luckily Hudini - as I call him know decieded to check out the hardwood floor when my husband was home. I am in the kitchen and here a PLOP....look in the livingroom to find the dog - a huge boxer - trying to "play" with the eel....I ran outside and grabbed my hubby.....he comes running in and I handed him a paper towel...yes, a paper towel....LOL.....he caught the eel and tried to throw him back in the tank - uuummm.....the lid was down - so the eel fell back to the floor.....using the same paper towel he had to catch him again - all while I am sitting on top the dog - finally got him back in the tank - since then, Hudini has not came back to the top of the tank.....I still laugh picturing that morning - If I were home alone - I can't say I would have tried to catch him -he scares me a bit.

i put a reptile screen over my tank
, just had to cut a hole for the hang on filter, and i'm good to go, just got my sfe about 3 days ago, foot long and thick as a pencil, and at night with the moon lights on i can see that if i didn't have the screen he would easily jump out..
