Shame on you floridians (baseball thread)

You morons in the Tampa Bay area, you can't even get 12000 people to show up at your ball games? Longoria was right to critizise you. I wouldn't worry about the "cardinal rule of never critizising the fan base" after all they don't have a fan base.

Tampa Bay Rays stars call low attendance at home 'embarrassing'

By David Brown
The two best players on the Tampa Bay Rays, including the face of the franchise, called out the team's fans, complaining that low attendance at Tropicana Field on Monday night was "embarrassing."
Hoo boy.
Evan Longoria(notes) (to reporters) and David Price(notes) (on Twitter) probably meant well when they wondered aloud why only 12,446 fans — the fourth-smallest crowd of the season — turned up when the Rays could have clinched a playoff spot.
Longoria's take, Via the St. Petersburg Times:
"We go out there and play hard for 162 games," Longoria said, "and for the fans to show the kind of support they're showing right now, you kind of wonder what else you have to do as a player."
Price said:
"Had a chance to clinch a post season spot tonight with about 10,000 fans in the stands....embarrassing"
Jeez, what is it with Tampa Bay athletes who live in glass houses?
No matter their good intentions, no matter their honesty, no matter if they have reason to be upset — even if they were 1000 percent correct — what Longoria (pictured right) and Price did was a mistake. /lib/ckeditor/images/spacer.gif?t=A39E
It's a cardinal rule: You don't criticize your fan base. It's stupid. It's ignorant. It won't get you what you want. It makes you look entitled, spoiled, narrow-minded and short-sighted.
The timing was poor, too, after losing 4-0 to the Baltimore Orioles. No matter how well you're doing — and the Rays are having a great season — nobody wants to hear how bad the attendance was on a night when your team is shut out. It's an obvious lack of perspective.
Longoria later said he was "just trying to rally the troops and get more people in here," which I believe.
Price already backtracked, saying, "If I offended anyone I apologize" — which is the classic non-apology apology. He's probably sorry, though, for one reason or another.
There are many reasons the Rays lag at 22nd overall in attendance. Start with: Bad stadium, bad location of stadium, bad economy. There's more. It's all irrelevant to Longoria and Price criticizing the fans.
It's just bad policy, scolding people for not paying their own money to watch you.
It's as if Longoria and Price are saying, "Well, I'd pay to watch us play. What's wrong with you?"

I love sports, but I sure as hell don't think any professional athlete should be telling people how to spend their hard earned money. Baseball sucks anyway other than the playoffs, by far and away the worst run sport of the big 3.

ouch, I probably watch about 80-100 games a year..
I don't know what it is, but I have really lost interest in baseball. I haven't watched more than a few innings this year. I really think the sport needs a salary cap and a new commissioner. I really agree with Mike Scioccia (sp?), they need to shorten the regular season, and expand the playoffs.

Hey, hey, hey, we're still looking for the missing chads and Elian Gonzalez, we don't have time for much more than that!

Longoria's comments were fine, probably was asked by a reporter on the subject and simply responded. I'm a big 'if the truth hurt's, oh well' guy, but Price's comments were out of line. Thank the fans that were there and move along.

The Trop. is a sub-par stadium in a sub-par section of St. Pete. I think using the economy is more of a poor excuse. It's down, but there should still be enough people that would attend.

Agreed, parking is a nightmare, access is a nightmare, the area is really not the best, and it's just low rent all the way around. I went there once several years ago and it was beat, went back two years ago and it was worse. It's just not a happy of pleasant experience, they should really be applauding those dedicated fans who went there to watch in spite of the venue. Frankly with attendance down that low, the traffic in the ill conceived parking may not have been too bad.

I went to an Indians game at Tropicana Field back in '07, and there is no doubt that the stadium and facilities are amongst the worst in baseball. However, that's no excuse for a mere 12,000 people to show up on a night their team could clinch a playoff berth. I could pick out 20 cities in the US without a major league franchise that would put WAY more people in the seats than that! Heck Columbus, Ohio (another city hit hard by the recession) put that many for their AAA teams championship game a few weeks ago. And that's the minors! And they compete against OHIO STATE FOOTBALL...

Shame on you Tampa...

I'm fundimentally against salary caps! Emmit Smith, Tony Dorset, Jerry Rice should have NEVER had to leave their home towns because of some weird rules on salary caps.

You market a mediocre product in hard times then complain when people wont spend money on it?
I quit following baseball much after their last strike. This just reminds me why.

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays are making 20,000 free tickets available to Wednesday night's regular-season home finale against the Orioles at Tropicana Field.
"You heard from a couple of our players about the crowd last night," said Rays team president Matt Silverman. "You can sense from that and other comments throughout the year that our players really thrive on the energy in the ballpark when it's full of our fans. We have a very good record in this ballpark on Saturday night concerts and other games where we're able to pack the place in."
Game time is 7:10 p.m. ET. Tickets will be distributed at all gates beginning at 4:45 p.m.

Silverman was asked if the Rays would have made the free tickets available if Evan Longoria and David Price had not made comments about the attendance after Monday night's game.
"It was something we had discussed, but I don't think we would have," Silverman said. "And it's not about the two players. It's about the sentiment expressed by the team throughout the year, the energy that they get from the fans when this place is full."
Tickets will be distributed one per person on a first-come, first-served basis and will be given away upon entry to the ballpark. Tickets may not be picked up in advance.
The complimentary tickets will be available in the Press Level, Baseline Box, Loge Box, Outfield, Upper Box and Upper Reserved sections.
Fans who have purchased tickets to Wednesday night's game in the aforementioned seating areas may exchange them at Guest Services for a Lower Box seat upon their arrival, based on availability.
"I'm not sure how the fans will react, but we're expecting a full house," Silverman said.
Contrary to a rumor that Price and Longoria were purchasing the tickets, the club will actually be footing the bill.
