how big to black tip reef sharks get? i saw that youtube video, and the shark in his tank was like 2 feet long, but it was super active. i'd like to get a shark tank in a few years, but the thought of a black tip never crossed my mind, and i still dont think i'll ever want one.
According to the thread above....
The Blacktip Reef (Carcharhinus melanopterus) is the most popular, and can grow to 6 ft (about 1.8 meters). Still often sold as pups (about 15-20" long) - this species is very active and requires lots of space. Pups need tanks/ponds of at least a 5-6,000 gallons just to reach maturity(at about 3-3.5' long). As an adult - they require a tank/pond with at least the following -no sharp corners, at least 5' deep, at least 650 sq.ft footprint, and a volume over 24,000 gallons.

Have you thought of doing a lagoon style tank? Sharks swim horizontally mainly so if you do something very short like my LFS's maybe 20 inches, but 12' by 12' they would have alot of swimming room, although the black tip is prolly out of the question. There is a really good thread somewhere on here you should try to find about a lagoon style tank. Just my two cents.

Agreed on maybe forgoing the black tip shark... What about an awesome ray or eel tank???? You could do a bamboo shark without too many problems.

I didn't think they needed that much water, I thought the one in that video seemed comfortable but it must be small...
I like your eel tank idea, I have 2 moray tanks and they are the best. how bout doing like 3-4 different types of morays, and maybe a grouper or 2 (if you like them), once they get adult size they would look awesome in there.

Oh ya. Some look downs, sting rays, or any other weird looking fish. How much are you will to spend on this system? Won't it be a ton just with all of the filtration and skimming?

Just make sure if he uses non-tempered glass for the sides that he DOES use it on the base. If he does not use tempered glass for the base than you are looking at a 1" thick base glass pane.
