Shark?

Kjr i love you now. I never even thought of that yet. How long would it be till it would be big enough to upgrade to a large system? Starting small for a small pup might be a good idea. How large for a puppy?

Well -How long till a pup would need to be upgraded -depends directly on the species and it's growth rate.
As for what size of pup fo you want - generally the best size is one that a couple of months old. That way it's already feeding on it's own. A good size is about 7-10" long.
Btw - Here's some rough grow rates - although these rates tend to vary depending on amount of food the shark is given and water temperature.
Horn Sharks - average about 3-6" per year.
Bamboo Sharks - average about 6-10" per year.
Epaulettes - average about 5-9" per year.
For figuring a good tank size for pups - I tend to use the following formula.
Length = about 3-3.5 body lengths, and Width = about 1.25-1.5 body lengths. To keep it simple - tank height will be 24".
To figure Shark's body length. Start with the length of the pup at the time you buy it. then add - the highest average growth rate x the number of years that you plan to keep the shark in that tank.
So if you start with a 8" bamboo pup, and plan to keep it in the tank for 1 year. Then you have a base body length of about 18". So using the formula -you would need a tank that's 60"L x 24"W x 24"H - which is roughly a 150 gallon tank. However - if you started with a 8" Horn Shark, and plan to keep in the tank for 18 months - then you would need a tank that's 60"L x 24"W x 24"H or a 150 gallon tank.

Zeke,
Going back a bit on posts:
You asked for help and Crimzy was giving you exactly what you asked for. In your early teens, you will learn alot and one of the most valuable lessons you can learn is to not be oposed to constructive criticism! Be open minded and able to accept opinions and advice, even if it isn't what you want to hear.
I have to agree with some of the posts that you really want to think this through and make an informed decision.
I also would like to compliment you on asking questions and doing lots of research before going out and buying a 20 gallon aquarioum and thinking you can keep a shark or a grouper, like some have in the past!!!
Just keep in mind, the shark is a living animal that didn't ask you to purchase it, so before taking this on be sure you are committed!!! I have a feeling you will make a good choice and good luck to you!

Yeah and i tried to word my reply as not aggressive or anything, just that i could keep a shark as well as any adult due to my situation right now.
Anyway my father finally replied and said i can't get a shark pool for one main reason. I have too many tanks in the other garage, and he doesn't want to add a big pool to another garage....

So there goes that..but atleast i've learned a few new things from this thread for the future. Like to start small for pups, and so on. Thanks guys for the help

He mentioned to try and look for something exciting for my 55g in my room.....eel? I guess i'll just have to make another eel thread now. Lets hope that works out

Thanks again for all the replies and help.

Well - with a 55 gallon tank - you could get a small "beginner" eel species - like the Snowflake Eel. But Snowflakes can get up to 30 inches long. There are also a few species of SW eels that stay less than 18 inches - which would be prefect for a 55 gallon tank.
As for Sharks - If your truely interested in keep one someday. I would suggest that it would be good to continue to research them. That way when your finally able to keep one - you'll know what it will take to keep one.
Til then - a small predatory FOWLR tank would be a good 55 gallon SW tank. With fish like a Small Eel, a Dwarf Lionfish, and a Dwarf Angel.

A bunch of golden dwarf morays would be cool, but they are $150 a pop. 12inches max is pretty managable too.

Yeah - the Dwarf Golden Moray was the one I was thinking of.
And I don't think $150 is too bad - when you think about that's also around the average price for a 9-12" California Horn Shark (Heterodontus francisci).
So a 55 gallon SW predator tank - with the following would be good.
- Dwarf Golden Moray Eel
- Dwarf Lionfish such as a Fu Man or Fuzzy
- Dwarf Angel such as Coral Beauty.
It would make for an interesting tank. ;)

Would all three of those get along with the current fish in the tank though? I don't want to risk any of my current fish

The lion would probably end up trying to eat the other two though...

What are the fish that you currently have in the tank?
And if you have any doubts - then drop the Dwarf Lion.
