sharks in cold water

why do sharks have to stay in colder water i understand out in the wild but most lfs in new jersey tell me they have to be at least 80 especially since i have a shark egg and that it will reduce the ick in the water is there was to be a break out hum my water went cold over nught left my windows open my shark egg shrunk and didnt move i cranked up the heat the egg is huge and he moves again

It depends on the shark. Your "domestic" tank sharks are more likely reef sharks and thus like warm water. I think they can tolerate a variety of temps but i would keep them warm, around 80.... Look at the sharks in open water typically "cold" water. Great whites, Whale Sharks, and a variety of the bigger sharks.

Most sharks available dont live in cold water, whoever told you that is wrong. Some are naturally from cold water(horns, smoothounds, some cats, etc) but alot of times even those can live fine in warmer temps. The shark egg you have will hatch a warm water brownbanded bamboo shark.
