Sharks?

I wanted to hatch a bamboo shark from an egg. I was going to put him in a 125g tank. Would this be big enough? If so, could I put more than one shark in the tank? Any information people have on the set up I should have for sharks and really any information for me in general this would be much appreciated. I have kept reef tanks for a long time but have never attempted an aggresive tank. Thank you.

the shark will do ok in that tank for quite awhile but you MUST UPGRADE in the future. And you gotta have strong/big filtration, skimmers, refugium,ect....

If you consider "quite a while" 9-10 months, go for it. The length of time you could realistically keep a bamboo in a 125 is short at best. IMO, it wouldnt be worth it. Wait for a larger tank so you dont have to move it later or rethink your stocking ideas.

Would he be ok in there for a year? I ask because the lfs has 2 and a nurse shark in a 125 and they are about 14 inches each.

Lfs do alot of things they shouldnt 3 sharks in a 125? Um no. Sharks are very active fish that never stop moving. At a minimun you would need at least a tank thta was 4 or more times the full grown length of the shark and it is also better in a poll or large round aquarium so that it doesnt have to stop and turn around. The only reasn lfs shops can do this is because they will most likely get rid of them in a fairly short time. Someone else just posted a big speech on here that i recomend you reading ill post the link in a little bit.

usually the lfs is just housing the animal so someone can take it off their hands. if they are actually keeping it for display that is very small especially for a nurse shark. these sharks get very large even though they are a bottom dweller. but anyways. i have hatched plenty of bamboo sharks in my 125g and have kept them in there for quite sometime. i have always upgraded them to friends tanks. since a standard 125 is 18 inches wide i usually wait until the shark is about 10 to 12 inches. considering that they are born are born around 6 to 8 inches you wont have too long to keep em if you were going by my standards. the time frame all depends on how often you feed them and how much. on feeding habits read AQURIUM SHARKS AND RAYS by scott w. michael. GREAT BOOK!!! also the tank setup should be dimly lit hight filtration a lot of protein skimming. also they are nocturnal so give it caves because it is a cave dweller. if you are putting other tankmates make sure you read on them that they are compatible.

Hey, you can always have an expensive dinner. Alot of sharks have sweet meat. If i ever keep a shark and it outgrows the tank, lunch is on.....

For such a long, accusitory post...it seems you may be one of those that need to do more research, as well.

I didnt buy anything? I was asking before i bought it you fool. The sole reason i asked is so that i wouldnt get yelled at like that. Don't waste my time with your posts if you wont take the time to read the ones that I have posted. Who are you to pass judgements that fast.

Since the tank is 18 inches wide couldnt I keep him in there until he grew to 18 inches and them upgrade him to a bigger tank? How long will it take him to grow to that size? (I know it differs but Im just asking for an estimate)

From what ive read it probably will take a year or less but i may be wrong. Also it would be advisable to get him a new tank before he got to 18 in. But he may be able to survive a little while but the longer he is in there the more stressed hes going to get.

Considering that I havent said anything negative about you, I'm sure you're not referring to me as the "fool". The only thing I said was "shame on that LFS".
You asked a question, a few people gave you answer. It wont work. And no, you cant keep an 18" long shark in an 18" deep tank. Sharks cant just bend themselves in half, to turn...they need room to turn around.

I wasnt calling you a fool i was talking to jr. I have read several of his posts and he always has something negative to say. Even when his comment has nothing to do with the initial question.
