Shaving Brush

My friend got shaving brushes from this webstie and he gave me one. I put it in the tank like 4 days ago and it is really doing well. Im just wondering about it. Does it help reduce nitrate? Will it multiply? Do I need to cut it or something to make it multiply? Does anyone have any experience. ALl i know is that it is some from of photsynthetic algae.

I had one and it did not last long either. My friend Bosco has had his for about 3 months now and it has stayed the same size. The tips have corraline algae growing on them too.
