She won't eat...

Well, I have said that our Undulated is skiddish and hides when we come up to the tank. She is so skiddish, she won't come up and eat. She comes out and looks for the food, but doesn't actively go for it. The Pink and Picasso get in there and start swirling, the Undulated gets scared and runs and hides.
She is losing weight, (kind of like what Tangs look like) and I am getting kind of concerned. I keep thinking, when she gets hungry enough, she will eat. She has eaten well off and on for the last couple of months, but she is just so afraid or something. Not exactly the behavior I had expected from this aggressive.
Any suggestions? Thanx.............Peace

I would suggest to try and put the Undy in his own tank. From there he will be alone and possibly more relaxed.Just because he's skittish doesn't mean he wouldn't kill any fish that comes near his hiding spot;if in any way he feels threatened. That way you can be a little more sure he's getting well fed.If he hides when you enter the room you could put some krill on a lettuce clip, leave and spy on him to see if he comes out to eat.Hope this helps.

Thanx for your response Titan, but I don't think we could get her out. She is just too skiddish. She has no trouble eating, when she can get to the food. very voracious actually. However, she gets scared when the others go for the food.
She goes in spurts, I think she will get in there when she gets hungry enough. It is actually my man who is more worried.
I was thinking about putting a barrier of some sort, to block the others from getting to the food until she has had her share.
Does that sound like a viable plan?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.........Peace

Yeah you could try it as I suppose it wouldn't hurt.If your feeding your undy on his side you could most certainely expect the others to be watching and hovering against the divider.Good luck and hope alls well, but as mentioned a 55 at the least or a 75 just for the Undy would be great.

Same goes for our Niger.I'll give him a couple sinking Marine-A pellets before feeding everyone else just to slow him down a little.

Unleashed, thanx for the tip. The other two will never let a piece go by thm, they are triggers as well. So, they eat everything that goes in the tank. We feed at one spot at the tank so she doesn't have her own spot.
Thanx Fungus and Titan also for you input, we will try some sinking pellets, she does stay on the bottom the majority of time, and I can point out little bits that the others have missed and she finds them. The other two are top water and rarely go down to the bottom. That just might work. Thanx again..........Peace

Well, she got a little this morning..........food, that is.
Sorry, just a little humor.
We got two snails and two crabs yesterday, turned the lights off before we put them in and let them have at least one night before their demise. Well, one crab down and one to go, both snails are still alive. The Undulated and Pinktail are ardently working on that though.
If we put in 50 crabs, how long will they last? If anyone comes close to the right answer, they get the prize. Just kidding. We will put half in the tank and half in the sump. Our mission is two fold. First, when we went on our 2 week vacation, we picked up some algae, so one is for control of that, and second, maybe it willl entice the Undulated to eat, so far the latter is working, and she is having fun. Is that bad?
Any way, has anyone else tried to house lots of crabs in thier trigger tank, and if so, how long did they last?...........Peace

well that all sounds good but you should also soak your food in garlic. i hear it stirs up the appetite a little bit.

DEA, thanx for the info, however, there isn't anything wrong with her appetite, it is voracious, she is just afraid of her own shadow and when there is any movement, she retreats. She's just a CHICKEN S#@T!
Update on the crabs and snails, all are okay, the crab was just hidin'. They are having fun trying though.

Maybe try feeding the piggies up top and then use a small rock and rubber band a piece of food to it and put it by her hide out .

Well, patience is the name of the game. I fed the two fatties, she of course wouldn't come up. Last night I waited and tried to get her some krill, but the Pinktail would not go away. So I waited him out. The Undy knew I was trying to get to her. I would show her the krill and she would ease her way up to the top, but would stop short when pink came around. But after about 5 minutes, she came up and got a big ole chunk.
Tomorrow we have several hermit crabs coming. I hope this doesn't sound bad, but it ought to be pretty funny. One of the dwarf zebra crabs ate one of the snails and took his shell last night. The smaller crab hid behind our mushroom coral all day. Perfect hiding place.
Thanx for your suggestions, if any or all work, I'll let you know.............Peace

For once, I thought I made a connection with the Undy. It was pretty cool actually. But this morning, nuttin'.

I gave the Pink and Picasso a couple of pieces, then I used the tweezers and would let her see the krill. When Pink went away, I showed it to her, and she would ease up toward the krill, then in comes the Pink. This went on for a while, I would hide the krill behind the braces when Pink came up. After several tries, she finally came up and got it right out of the tweezers. The cool thing is that she knew I was helping her.
She saw me hide it from Pink, and then show it to her when he swam away. I tried this the night before, and the Pink spit water at me two times.
That was too fun. But she wouldn't come up. I hadn't fed them like that before. So the second night I just waited until she got it.
I have heard that Undulateds will train that way. The Pinktail and Picasso eat out of the tweezers all the time. I am just surprised that, from everything I have been told and have read, this fish is so timid. Don't get me wrong she shows herself when she wants to, but I would think she would harm one of the other fish before she would go hungry. I don't know.
We get the crabs today, waiting on them now. I hope this works out. Does anyone else have hermits in with their triggers? We ordered shells so they can move up in class when they out grow these. So far, both of the crabs have made it. The triggers mouths are too big to get to the meat, and so far they aren't strong enough to break the shells. We'll See though.
Babbling again, sorry...............Peace

Well, an update on the eating. Hand feeding each. It is going quicker each day. Goodness they are some smart fish.
It only took two days and they have it down. It may seem like a lot of trouble, but it is soooo worth it. Interaction that way is too cool.
I have been able to put my hands in to clean for quite some time without any "attacks".
I really love these fish. :jumping:
Thanx to everyone for their suggestions and help

Remember this thread...when that Undalated matures and develops that Bull Of The Woods attitude you'll be wanting it to stop eating...especially the tank mates...just kidding but they can and often do get MEAN as they mature.

If you go to "Let's see pics of your aggressive tank" thread, or In the pictures Heading "Post of a Pic of yourself" page 7 I think, there are pics of all three Raz-Pinktail, Taz-Picasso, Spaz-Undy.
We have it down not and she is gaining weight.
I know all the horror stories, we have a 90gal. with her name on it when she becomes the "evil doer" :scared:
.............Peace

Titan, I'll try and put up the only pics we have so far. She is such a character. Spaz is such a fitting name for her.
The Pinktail is Raz and Picasso is Taz. They are great fish!!! :joy:
