as hernits grow, they need a larger shell to move into. Where is a good place to aquire suitable shells? At what point should the new "empties" be added to the tank?

The lfs i go to gives me free shells, since they have so many. Just ask them if they have any left over shells. If you want i think you can order some from SWF, but im not sure anymore. You will know its the right time to put them in, when the crab looks like he is poking out of his shell when in fact he is as far in as he can go. Make sure you boil them first.

i get them from the ocean, but i guess that isn't an option for everybody. most lfs will sell them to you before they give them away, unless you've got a buddy that works there. however, try looking in one of those fabric and craft supply stores that your grandma always hangs out in. i was in one such place with my girlfriend once and found a decent selection of shells that i guess they sell for people to glue onto hats or something, (???), and they were so nice i actually bought a bag just to spice it up in my tank.

. It happens. Anyway, I think a hermit will not out grow their shell unless they find a larger one. Then after they take a new shell they grow into it. Not 100% sure though. If you do not provide enough shells for them they will just find another on their own by killing something else for a new shell then they may only wear it for awhile then be on to something new.
