Short Cycle... Possible?

Hey All
So far I have been setting up my tank on the advice of a good friend of mine who has been keeping salt water fish for about 20 years or so. After finally getting my stand/tank/hood in today, he informed me that I can probably start adding fish in about 1-2 weeks. (MUCH FASTER THAN I EVER THOUGHT!!!)
In order to get the tank stable quickly, he recommended that I add about 1.75 LBS of live rock per gallon to my tank and add a product called "Cycle" to the tank. Then, he pretty much assured me that it would be stable enough to add the first real fish in 1-2 weeks.
Also, please note that my life rock is coming from a local aquarium tank that is already established.
A lot of info online says this will work, but a lot of people say it won't. (And even more B****H about it!) Anyone have an opinion on this?
PS: I have used Cycle in my Cichlid Tank before and I can say that it DOES contain active bacteria that consumes ammonia and nitrates/nitrites. So I am positive it is more than just snake oil...

When you have enough "live" stuff, it's possible to have no cycle at all.

if the LR is coming from an already cycled tank then its no need to add this thing they cause cycle. I wouldnt ever add anything to my tank...
Cycle shouldnt be to long anyways.
Best bet it to get ur LR and just ait it out and tst ur parameters

Yep, did my cycle in 3 weeks. I started with live rock from my old system plus an extra 100 lbs that I had bought. I supplemented that by using prodibio's startup additive. Took about 1 1/2 weeks before the ammonia was clear so I guess I could of started putting in my fish after that...

If you are adding established live rock really not much of a need for product. Just let it settle in for about a week and then you can add a fish. I would add fish very slowly though. Maybe one every two-three weeks.

When I set up my office tank I added fish the same day, BUT everything that went into that tank came from one of my already established tanks; aragonite, LR, corals, and water
. Then I added the fish.

Do you plan on doing a QT with the fish? Depending on the size of fish and tank you have you may want to do the QT in your display tank. I cycled my tank using pure ammonia from the grocery, this didn't involve fish for the cycle. If you load all that live rock in and add your fish you run a fair chance of having an ich outbreak which would require taking all livestock from your display for a month for it to die.
