Should I get an iPad?

My initial post was relevent, just not helpful.
It was not relevant at all. What if I happen to say "cats" in one of my posts? Will you then do a youtube search for lolcats and post a link to one of them? Relevance, although subjective, does have its limits. Sorry, Cam, I can't agree that your post was relevant. Especially because I made reference to keeping the mac vs. pc war out of it. Posting a video where some geeky losers try to make a joke out of a new Apple product is a jab from the PC world. Although I will admit I am having a little fun pwning you in this little pissing match, I'd rather go and spoon with my super fine wife.

I didn't realize that this was an argument. I felt it was relevant. In any case, I must say congrats on your victory. Be sure to tell your super find wife (look something else that's subjective!) about how you "pwned" me today. I'm sure it will get you some extra action. You're so awesome. Go you.

The iPad looks like its going to be an oversized iPod Touch. I dont believe that you will be able to run Word on it, so the modifying of Word docs is out. You cant run regular Mac computer programs on it, just apps written for it like the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Buy it from somewhere like Walmart that lets you return anything. Give the ipad a 30 day trial run to see if you like it.

it sounds like you are bound and determined to get one...people have given you alternatives and you continue to shoot them down....it is almost like someone that is trying to put a tang in a biocube, only with electronic devices.
Not to be a d(*$, but weren't you the same person that was posting "o wo is me" threads a few months ago? Of all people, I think that you should realize that things can turn south at any point...I can think of a bunch of things to do with $500 around my house.

You didn't seem too impressed with the Itouch or Iphone, and the Ipad is essentially an oversized version of that. Not to mention, if you want to use the Ipad remotely, you have to sign up for a 3GS service, which I hear starts at $70/month. You will have wireless capabilities, so the 3GS is not mandatory. As of right now, your only keyboard will be the on-screen touch type that is similar to the one on the Iphone. Albeit it will be bigger, but as an Iphone owner, I can attest the response on the keyboard is not that good. Does the Ipad have USB ports, or other means to save/add data to it? I've also heard there's a huge flap going on about the battery replacement. You may get 10-hour runs on it, but you can't replace the battery if it goes bad. You have to pay Apple $100 or more to replace the battery. You're also can't upgrade your memory or your storage space.
Have you looked at the various Netbooks on the market? Dell and HP both have impressive versions with a 10" - 11" screen, up to 3GB in memory, a 250GB SATA drive, regualr keyboard, USB ports, 5-in-1 media slot, and a nice WXGA screen that you can watch videos on. They come with either Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, and I think HP even has a tablet version.
Like you said, it boils down to what you want to use it for. If you're just wanting an alternative and smaller method to access your emails and other information you store on your laptop, then a netbook would be the wiser choice. If you like the idea of having all the neat and crazy apps you find on the Iphone, just using them on a bigger screen, then the Ipad would be your choice. What do you want to do with this toy - work functionality or play? That's the question.

At first I wasn't a fan until I really looked into it and saw all the capabilities. I would wait though because they are most likely going to update the I-pad. I have the first Gen. ipod touch and now they have speakers on the new ones (don't know if i would use them but you get the point). The only down side I see is that it does not run actual programs like a tablet(I know tons and tons of apps but what about the programs i run on my Mac).

A tang in a biocube is simply wrong... no one argues that except the blinded newbies. I am open to ideas which is why I started the thread. I am taking the purchase very seriously, as I too believe that $500 can be just as easily spent in any number of ways. I think the reason I started this thread because I've been oscillating between whether or not to get one.
stdreb had a great point. Even though I'd be doing double the work putting something into Outlook and then sync'ing it to my phone, it's the free option, and that makes it all the more enticing.
Not sure about posting any woeful threads recently. I rarely complain about anything, except maybe PEZenfuego, so I think you may have me mistaken with someone else, my friend. Although yes, things did go south for me about 2 years ago. stdreb's free option is becoming more and more enticing, but I wanted to wait and see what the poll on this thread would come up with.
If I buy it, I've got 30 days to return it... or I can hand it off to my wife, who could use a newer computing interface for facebook and stuff.

Good post. I would just get the wifi one... no need for 3g, although it's $15 for 250mb/mo, $30 for unlimited.
The netbooks don't wake/sleep as well. iPad has instant on/off. Of course, all the sweet apps are nice too!
When I come home, I very seldom take out my laptop for any reason. I have to get it out, plug it in, turn it on, and do all that in the opposite order when I go back to work tomorrow. With an ipad, it's meant to be wireless. I'll just get a second usb charger for home and I can hot-swap between the locations whenever i need a charge.
I don't know though... I may not get one.

You said you get email instantly. so I'm assuming you're not using pop3 or imap. I guess I just don't see the issue. If you're using their enterprise system. you type somehting into your phone as far a schedule and it pushes to to the laptop or vise versa. You'd get reminders while working on the computer and on your phone. If you were to lug around another piece of electronics, you'd have to be using that for reminders too. so you'd be sitting in your office, then pull out this other piece of electronics to check your schedule... Unless you sync your BB to your ipad. Which is what you're not wanting to do with your laptop.
Even if you're using a pop3 or imap system, I'd rather just plug it into your computer for 3 or 4 minutes and let it sync then have to get a Man purse to carry around your iPad...
unless you're just trying to justify buying a new toy. To which I reply. I like new toys...

I use pop, but Blackberry has an exclusive service - it's true "push" email. It doesn't matter which email client I have - if it's set up with the blackberry server, then I get all my emails instantly - they're "pushed" to my phone. The iPhone has recently set up something like it, but it's not instant. To date, only Blackberry's offer true push email as a part of the package. I don't have enterprise or an exchange server set up.
I'd use the iPad in place of my planner and laptop, basically. I'd be melding the two together and will only use my laptop for processor intensive stuff.
So in my life, an iPad and a blackberry would exist primarily. I started the thread because I'm not sure about such a shift and need to pick you guys' brains.

There is no contract, it's month to month - cancel anytime. The 3G version is also unlocked so it will work with any carrier, although the $15/$30 plan that Apple quoted is through AT&T.

The question for you is, will the Ipad have all these apps you rely on that you use on your laptop? If you can get every app you need (or comparable one from the Apple Store) that will let you do what you're currently doing on your laptop, then go for it.
