Should I Just Go Ahead and Hypo?

Got a new Imperator (small kine) last week, and it's been doing real good except for today I caught it flicking and rubbing (just one instance). Should I just go ahead and hypo it or wait and watch some more? I was fixing to do a freshwater dip on him soon anyway, would hypo negate that necessity? Might I hypo him with the fish I already have in hypo, or is there a risk of him reinfecting them? :notsure:

He is in a QT? Do not do a freshwater dip. Some say it is effective, but it realy causes them alot of stress. The main problem with fw dips is that it may cause some of the ich to die, but whatever tank the infected fish was in prior to the dip most likely already has some ich that have dropped off in it. Therefore after the stressfull dunk into an unnatural environment that causes their respiration to excellerate and basically causes a panic attack in your fish, they are put back into the tank that still has ich in it. Don't bother with the dip. I know you said that you are not sure if it is ich or not. Wait it out and see if he does have it. This is the reason for quarentine. And no, you cannot add him to your fish already in hypo because he will indeed prolong the process.

Fish is indeed in quarantine. Did a lot of research on FW dips, and intended to do so with methylene blue. From what I understand the MB relaxes the fish and facilitates breathing, though I can provide no testimony as I have yet to perform one. I also intended to dump the water from the QT, rinse it and fill with new water. Think I'll follow your advice on waiting but not sure at what point to take action. At any rate I'm not thrilled at the prospect of having to manage two tanks in hypo.

I own an lfs and use Methylene blue each time I introduce new fish. Just be sure to do it in an acclimation bucket. Don't use it in a tank. it will completely destroy your biological filtration. When I get new arivals I use drip method into the bucket. I add the methylene and let them drip acclimate for another 2-3 hrs. I have not had ich since I started doing this. FW dips do stress the fish incredibly. Please don't do that.

I have a Long-nose Butterfly, Royal gramma, scooter blenny, 2 oc clowns in a tank that now has ich. LFS suggested freshwater dip, but that doesn't sound so good now! How do you hypo a tank and how does that elliminate ich? Please help as I am about to move my fish to the QT and don't want to mess that up. :notsure: :help:

Check out the FAQ's at the top of this forum. The procedure is outlined there.
A FW dip will not get rid of the problem. Hyposalinity in a quarantine tank is your best bet.
