Even precured lr will cause a spike in your system. It depends on where you get it and how well it has been cured. When I add lr to my system I check it thouroughly. Even when it seems ok I only add a little at a time and run my protein skimmer and filter pads for added protection. How big is your tank? Where did you get the lr? Does it smell bad? What are the inhabitants?

Man, 160 gal tank is rightous as far as being big. If it is cured lr, it should NOT smell (if you smell it and it smells like the bay at low tide-it is not fully cured). You are always going to get some die off during transit, but should not be that bad. IMO, if it does NOT smell, I would just add it. You are going to get a spike, but if it really is CURED lr, then the spike will only be short. If you don't have corals, and it is a 160 gal tank that is well established you should be fine.
