Should I raise my MH lighting?

the farther you raise it the less it will heat the tank and imo thats the option to go with not a chiller for a 28 gallon

so whats the point of buying an AIO tank if you have to have the hood raised 12 inches off the water? you might as well take the MH out of the hood or just get a sunpod or something

I didn't say it WILL be at 12 inches high. I was thinking like 6 inches at least. No, I'm not going to be getting a chiller because they are too expensive. The tank isn't set up yet.

I have my mh about 3-4 inches off the top of my 29 gallon with a fan blowing across the top and I've had no problems.

Or you could leave the hood where is at, and just install 2 small fans on it.
1st fan in the back near the bottom of hood. blowing air into the hood.
2nd fan on the roof of the hood. blowing air out of the hood.
Even better, 2 fans in back of hood and 1 fan on the roof of hood.

What is your temp at the current level? I know I couldn't keep my 29 under 85 when it was right over the tank. I've since upgraded to a bigger tank and the temp is stable. The only problem with moving it higher is you lose light intensity the further away it gets from the tank.

Ok, I raised the light 3 inches. Here are a few pictures.

This fan is VERY strong. Its got an adjustable speed thing too.

I'm going to go cut out a mesh to cover the aquarium top so fish wont jump out. I got the 4 legs from the LFS.
*Note* there are NO fish in there right now.

It looks good . i don't think you'll have problems.. I used to run a 29g tank with 250W mh+ 2 54w actinics. about 7" from water surface, no fans , no glass cover. & no problems.. I had them hanging from the ceiling though, not that it makes alot of difference..
