Hi there. I just recieved my new adhi 45 refugium. This will be my first time using a refugium set up. What do you recommend I use for the bottom. If you think sand what kind and how much. If you think mud what is the best and how much. Thank for the advice I appreciate it

I never understood the concept of the "foam polishing block" between the refugium and the return pump. Why go to the trouble of creating a dedicated breeding ground for microcrustateans, only to keep them from getting back into the main tank? I mean, yeah, I know the fuge is more for macroalgae and DSB's for nitrate removal, but it just seems weird that we wouldn't take advantage of the food availability as well. If you're gonna have a foam block somewhere, why not between the drains and the fuge...keep some of the physical scum away from the fuge that way. Sure you'd still lose pods, but not nearly as many as the way they have it set up now.......
eh. Maybe I'm missing the point.
