shrimp and worm spit

I bought a peppermint shrimp 2 days ago and he is fairly docile. He stays hidden in the lowest levels of live rock hanging upside down. He only comes out for seconds to chase down a peice of fish kibble at feeding time. Would it be a good idea to get him a buddy or will he eventually become braver with time?
There is a rock in my tank that I assume has many spagetty worms in it because they have long tentacles that slowly slide food to their little holes. Every once in a while a tube with shoot out of the rock and it will spit out slimy junk. Is this food waist, poo, or reproductive slime?
