If you don't have any test kits, take a sample of your water to your fish store and ask him to test for you... your
ammonia level
nitrite "
nitrate "
PH
and just to be sure, your salinity or specific gravity
Then post the results.
An easy to understand, user friendly book for a beginner (at least for me) was "The Simple Guide to Marine Aquariums"
Mind you, that this book only touches each topic, but when you understand this info, then you can research each topic of concern, individually.

shrimp are sensitive bugs. i would wait untill u know for sure your tank is stable. spend that money on some test kits, u really need them with saltwater, thats what i would do.
