shrinking sponge & algae...

I have had a sponge in my tank for over a year now. I have never really had luck with sponges, or I should say I have never had a sponge grow. The sponge seems to be slowly shrinking. I am assuming that it is either getting eaten or dying. Would this sponge be contributing to my hair algae problem? I don't test any PO4 or NO3, and I'm really confused about whats feeding the algae. Do sponges tend to leach out more nutrients then other corals as they die?
Mention hair algae on this board and you get a million questions. So, 90g w/15g fuge growing macros. Set up for a looonnng time.

i have never had luck with sponges. but here are somthings i learned about them. they cant be exposed to air. (even from the tank at the lfs to the bag and back. the need high flow and low light. when they start to die they wither and get thin. its extremly hard to bring one back. there... is that depressing enough for you?
anyhoo. i quit trying. good luck.:)
