They always say that euro-reef are the best skimmers. They are very expensive. I bought an asmG series 4x from ***************.com and it is amazingly good. Someone who used to build euro-reef builds them and they are a touch less expensive. I am new to the hobby and have only had a pitifully terrible berlin airlift and an absolutely fabulous asmG skimmer. I have no experience with other skimmers. After many failures what I think is best to do is spend money on your pump and your protein skimmer and probably get a uv sterilizer. Buy something that is rated higher than what you acually think you need. This hobby seems to require that you put out big bucks first for good equipment and spend a long time cycling(several months) and seasoning the tank before adding expensive fish otherwise they will not thrive. You can buy some stuff from ---- or from this sites adds. UV sterilizers are ok to buy that way because you are going to keep replacing the bulbs anyway. Skimmers are probably ok to buy that way because most of them are plastic cylinders attached to a pump which you can replace when it dies out. But I would buy new pumps, only because then you are sure there will be alot of life left in them before they die out. The actual filter and sump you can build if you have to. I bought an amiracle we-dry filter from ---- (an mr300) for $200. After using it for 8 months, I'm finding it is very awkward to attempt to clean. My skimmer was so big that you can not open and use the chemicle trays in the filter and the water level needed by the large skimmer brought the water level of the amiracle sump right up into the bioball chamber. so, finally, I just built my own wet-dry using a 50 gall sterlite container I got at target. It is working great, and the best part is now I can easily remove any part of the filter to put in or take out stuff. I also was able to nearly double the bioball volume. so there are alot of advantages to the dyi approach. Hope this helps, its , my opinion only, other people on this site have more experience and can probably give better advice.
