Both of my tangs have these like spots on them. the spota re white and greyish I guess. This is not ick because these things are 3 dimentional it looks like they have sand on them but it is not sand unfortinatley. Does anyone know what it might be and how I can treat them?

I can not post a pic yet, maybe tomorrow I need to go find my camera. Shouldn't hyposalinity make it go away I am at 1012 usually and when I add water I get lower to 1011. It is a fish only tank.

Take a look at the pictures of sick fish in the Diseased Fish Thread. How long have you had the fish?

Im sorry are you referring to specific gravity of 1.012 then usually when you add water you are at 1.011.. unless i am reading this wrong, you are in serious trouble if you keep your tank at that SG, nothing would become live, and certainly no biofiltering.. Am I reading this wrong?

It's a Fish only tank so my only biofiltration is the live sand. The reason I keep the salinty so low is to protect the tank from parisites. Am I making a mistake I am new to the hobby, have the tank for like 5 months now.

Im sorry, maybe I am wrong, but my sense tells me keeping your tank at that salinity would be hard to acclimate any new fish, because typically stores around here anyway keep theirs around 1.019 - 1.022 so i would think it would take days to acclimate a fish properly so they dont stress... how long have you been running this salinity for? and how do you acclimate fish to it?

I do a drip acclimation for like 2 hours. The store I mainly use told me that wholesalers keep their salinity at 1010 to protect against parasytes, any fish that they get is automaticly cured from ick 48 hours later. They are a very very reputable store too. However you logic does make sense to me because stores do not need heavy biofiltration because they turn fish around and out of the store every 3 to 5 days, therefore low salinity is best for them. visit them www.fishexpo.com they are real pros. They did a 1700 gallon tank for a buddy of mine, they did a great in wall job with a really hi tech system.

Please keep in mind that the OCEAN tests at 1.026. Keeping yours at 1.010 or 1.011 is just not necessary. If you QT ALL your fish then keeping the maintank will be easier and diseaseless more often then not. IMO you are doing yourself a great disservice because you cannot keep anything for very long ie. LR,LS, corals, inverts list goes on and on. Such a low SG did you no good if your Tangs have ICH which sure sounds like they do.

Your options are Hypo and Copper! Thats basically it. Just got done with my 3 week copper treatment myself. By the way, what size is your tank and the age?

90 gallon with a 30 gallon sump so ther is over 100 gallons of water to treat. It is 6 months old. I shoul add copper and treat the whole tank?
