bulkheads are all different...i know acrylic traces his bulkheads onto where he wants it drilled...there are standard bulkheads and heavyduty bulkheads...
THIS IS JUST A ROUGH QUESTIMATION
if you get a 1" standard bulkhead you will want to drill 1 1/8"
if you get a 1" heavy duty bulkhead you will drill 1 3/4"
just an example, but like i said in your last thread..wait til you get the bulkhead before you begin drilling..you will save lots of frustration this way.

Heavy duty would be a sched 80 and yes the hole size is definitely bigger....I love the sched 80 stuff though.....Hold on I'll run out to the garage and grab the bulkheads there sitting on the chiller and take a measurement real quick for you.....

Sorry about the delay....Just grabbed the bulkhead and it's the standard sched 40 bulkhead black in color made by LifeGuard which are pretty standard, but the prescribe for an 1" bulkhead you would need 1 3/4" hole.

If you know where you're getting the bulkheads from, call or look them up on the web for the specs., just to be sure. My schd. 40 bulkeads require a 1 3/4" hole.

I am drilling an AGA 20 long
6 holes......myself.......= Stressful
You may be thinking why 6 holes... Well
2- 1" to sump (another 20L)
1- 3/4" Return by Quiet One 3000
1- 1" Intake for CL Powered by Quiet One 2200
2- 3/4" Return Split by SCWD
The tank will be bare bottom and an SPS tank
Lighting will be a Reefstar 250 watt w/ Hamilton 14000K bulb
hung about 13" from water surface
Im bored so ask any ?'s u want

o and once the tank is setup i want to find some Neon GSP, like EfishNseas, and superglue it to the bottom. Hopefully it will make a carpet. Not sure this is possible and thought it would look cool tho

ouch, i dont like the idea of drilling into glass, but good luck. so i am assuming your going to have 3 holes on the bottom and 3 holes along the back? or am i not understanding your plan?

Glass is super easy to drill with patience......What are you using to drill? I always use my Rotozip and bits from Harbor Freight and the handy dandy garden hose to keep things cool......Take your time, don't force the bit, let the bit do the work for you........

nope all hole in back, not sure why but it is my preference. i am using a Dremel Pro - 30,000 rpm. and a dremel diamond point bit. I have already drilled about 7 practice holes in a 35 tall that was leaking and i did not crack it.
Drilling is very easy, use the highest speed, and go slow. also keep the glass and bit wet. i did this with a hose.

Why? I never run my Rotozip wide open

how many rpm is ur rotozip? i use my dremel at about 20,000 rpm. I just got finished drilling the six holes and if i dare say so myself, they look prty darn good. sure beats 10$ a piece at the LFS w/ no garauntee about cracking. Even if they crack the tank on the sixth hole you have to pay for all six holes. this is the reason i decided to do the procedure myself. plus its good experiance for the future.

To be honest I've drilled so many holes I don't even look at the settings on my tools that much....it's all by sound.....I tune it by sound and by feel alot of times and depends on the tank as well, and how big of holes I'm drilling.....Usually I'm drilling 1 1/2" or bigger bulkheads.....I would say I probably run about 25,000rpms.....I use to have a dremel the basic one that was fantastic, and then upgraded to the Pro, and took over to a buddies house and cut about 4' of drywall and the thing burned up.......wouldn't even turn......Needless to say next morning back to Lowes, and traded for the Rotozip with alittle more juice.....I don't think I'd ever go back though.....Dremel does have more accessories though IMO....

yeah dremel bits are everywhere. i understand about the tuning by sound thing. after the 5th hole i would just turn it on and for some reason it always seemd perfect.
Do you think a 250 Watt Halide will be too much on a 20 long if it was 12" off the water?
