By definition all silicones have silicates in them, very little of the silicates leech into the water, glass is also made from silicates, it's not an issue.

Do you have any pics of that DIY tank with the cichlids in it yet?

i'll have to check. it is hard to find the cost i got more than i needed for one tank and over bought some things
the one thing the cost the most was the glass $200
i used two sheets of 3/4" plywood with some left over
200+ S/S screws
pint of wood filler
Qt of paint for the outside
1 gal two part paint for the inside
12 small foam paint rollers
5 cheap paint brushes
glass 1/2" X 24" X 60"
8'X10' pond liner cut to fit
20' of trim wood
waterproof glue - pint
plus sand paper ?

That's what I was afraid of, the price of the glass. Still, it's cheaper than you can buy a tank that size for. Besides, I love working on projects.
