Simple coral ID.........

Hey guys, I have a coral that I have been wanting to exactly verify before I go and try to frag it as it's getting too big for itself. It wont split, so I have to do it myself. It's about 6-1/2" in diameter and about 8" tall and healthy as all getout.
For two years I thought it was a Toadstool leather, but after I have seen other "Toadstool Leathers", this one dosent look like them. This one looks like a mushroom like you would see on a Mario Bros. video game......well, the shape anyway.

Here is a pic......

Thanks for any help,
Joe

Is it simply a Toadstool? Is this particular one a Leather? I don't think it is. What all kinds of Toadstools are there?

All toadstools are leathers. And read my previous post

its a toadstool leather. medium flow and moderate to high lighting. the 'tentacles' coming off the top of it are a sign of good health, just keep an eye on it and at the end of them there should be little feathery things that come out. thats when you should feed it.
edit: stupid giants fan beat me to it.

BTW that toadstool don't need high lighting. Only yellow fiji leathers are the leathers that need high lighting. But extra light never hurts

^duh. thats why I said moderate to high lighting. if it needed high lighting Id of swapped that. then left out the moderate part. and FYI: this week and this week alone I am a giants fan. patriots = schmucks and cheaters.

Thanks a bunch guys. Very good info. To be very honest with you guys, I have never fed this Toadstool anything since I bought it as a small frag. See....THIS LINK.........lower left
All I have been doing is feeding the fish and keeping normal parameters with regular water changes. I will add in some Phyto Feast once a week on average.
How is one supposed to feed this Toadstool?
Thanks again guys, awesome site!

One other question......will this ever split on it's own? If not, how does one go upon fragging it?
Thanks again,
Joe

based on size of polyps id say anything from microvert to phytoplex would be just fine. no plankton over 30 microns. and, like alot of corals, it dosnt necessarily have to be fed, but that will just make it grow faster and be healthier. Im suprised that you get such good polyp extension and never feed. the way you frag this piece, I do believe, is you just cut a piece off its 'head' and Id use a dilluted iodine to squirt on the open 'wound' after it is cut. dont quote me on the fragging technique, but I would just cut a small piece, put it in a low flow area, and go from there.

You don't need to feed the coral. It appears to be growing, so I wouldn't change what you are doing. The genus name is Sarcophyton, of which there are several species.
They can drop 'babies' off of the main stalk. I have only seen this a few times, so I'm not sure how common it is. You can also frag the leather. If you do a search on the board, there are some threads devoted to fragging that will give you an idea of what to do.
