Without spending all my x-mass $$$ on a fuge ....would the placement of some Chaetomorpha on a egg crate ( I am very afraid of the sexy time made by Caulerpa) work the flow on theupper portion of the sump is slower as the water enters from the bottom of the last baffle.

If you are just asking if it's OK to put some eggcrate over your pump so you can lay some chaeto in there without it getting sucked into the pump I'd say yes you can do it. I am doing about the same thing over my skimmer pump. It hasn't been sucked into the pump since I did it. Make sure it's not very close to the intake of the pump though.

I have the chaeto sitting above a skimmer pump, not a return pump. I don't use a prefilter on either.

That will work fine. I would make sure to have some type of sponge on the intake of the return pump though.

I have little to add in a constructive manner, but wanted to say that the idea looks great in theory and I may try it myself! I've wanted to use a refugium with caleurpa, and even "sexy time" wouldn't frighten me with this set up. Plus, there would be little flow up there so should be perfect for it...
