simple question

What do you recommend for a background. My guess would be solid blue or black.

some people buy the solid color plastic back grounds. Some people spray paint he back of the tank blue or black. I prefer black the coralline will really stand out on the black back ground.

paint, water can get in between the plastic junk, and the paint is permanent.

is the paint harmful to the tank creatures at all? or is there any special kind you can use?

nope, once it dries it wont harm anything....if the tank is not emtpy i would go with the plasti backing...unless you want to drain then spray regular spray paint will work.
