you should always siphon the sand, i do it every other week with a water change,it is ok to lose a little sand every once in a while. you can also buy things to help clean your sand like,Nassarius Snails, they do a great job of cleaning and eating waist from left over food. for more info on them click here You can get a Lawnmower Blenny also. they will also eat left over food and move the sand around so that it will stay clean. for more info on them click here
good luck to you
i am sure your sand will be fine

tubos do not clean sand they will eat algae off of the rocks. nassarius snails will dig into the sand and eat bacteria in the sand,

I would not recommend siphoning the sand. If it was crushed coral then yes but not live sand. You will remove a lot of beneficial creatures that help with your filtration. A cleanup crew is all you need to take care of it. Maybe a Goby as well.

I've read both sides on different sites and it is generally agreed that a "light" cleaning of live sand is ok. that means you don’t ram the vacuum to the bottom of the tank and totally disturb it, you just suck up the surface layer of debris that builds up, but you don’t do a deep cleaning.
