Sizing a skimmer, probably a stupid question

Do you base it on tank size or total water volume of the system?
If I have a 60 gallon tank and a 30 gallon fuge, do I need a skimmer for 90 gallons?

Yes you need to tank into account for the total tank volume because the skimmer has a flow rating and depending on the volume of the tank you need to be able to turn over or filter the water effectively.
