Skilter question

I have a Skilter  protein skimmer and it is a piece of junk. It never produced hardly anything and I emptied the tray about once a week and it was never full. Well, I found the skilter modification information with the wooden airstone and air pump. It bubbles up a lot more and now it is producing a lot of dirty liquid. Is this what it is suppose to produce or is it suppose to be more foam? I have never seen a real protein skimmer produce so I am just wondering if that is what they are suppose to produce.

it should be more foam than anything but if its collecting dirty dirty water then that works too. Youll just have to keep an eye on your salinity since the skimmer portion is taking water out of the system. It won't be drastic but over time....

Oh, I did use a little stress coat this morning. I just found some information about how that happens when you add that stuff. I just did the Skilter modification yesterday so I was just suprised to come check my tray and it was almost full. Well, thanks.:D

I heard the mod is the only way to get it to work well. Just hope it doesn't start clanking like i've also heard they do :)

Well it is kinda loud and it produces a lot of bubbles in the tank. I will eventually get something else, probably the CPR bak pak 2.

im sorry you got one. I don't recomend them to anyone where i work. I've heard nothing but bad things about them. It may just be inferior parts. A skilter concept is really genious though if someone can make one that works well

I just put in a CPR Bak Pak 2r a couple of days ago. The first 24hours, it looked like a bubble machine. After that, very few bubbles and pulling out some very nasty looking sludge. I love it so far and glad i purchased it;)

I ended up with a "Multi-Skimmer" by ViaAqua. It is the same concept as a Skilter (skimmer and filter in one) and mine seems to be working very well. It is pretty quiet and it does produce foam. They are more expensive though. I think I paid about $150. For an extra $100 you can get the delux version w/ a 5 watt UV Sterilizer (although UV is controversial at least you would have the option of using it if you wanted) BTW I saw somewhere on the web that there were selling the deluxe for LESS than I paid for the standard --- DOH!!!!!!! Bad Dobie!! Bad!!

I love my skilter but I have heard many complaints about them. I guess it's just one of those things that works for some and not others. Mine takes quite a bit of junk out of my tank and I actually purchased it as a last resort to get rid of an algea bloom that would NOT go away by any other method.
Big question though. How long has your tank been set up? If it is fairly new there won't be anything for the skimmer part to skim.

I have a SeaClone protein skimmer. I feel it works great!!!!!!!! It is easy to setup and use. I would like to hear others opinions on it though.

i have a skilter and yes it is loud but i only ran mine wheni wasnt home or in the room it worked fine as long as you dont have to much air going in it. as for the mods check and make sure you dont have the air on to high.
if you do and are not getting dry foam its a waste of water thats bout it.
of course i got a prizum for bout 50 for my lfs (used about 2 weeks)and i love it..
