Skimmer affected by Stresscoat?

I have an ASM G3 skimmer in a sump. When I got it, I cleaned it out because it was used, and even at the lowest setting it would overflow. I let it sit for a few months without using it. I then started tinkering with it and found that it worked! The other night I added some stress-coat to my tank because my Emporer Angel got nicked up by my clown for some reason. Thought the Stress coat would help. Next thing I know my skimmer is overflowing again - even at the lowest setting. Apparently Stress-coat is the problem????? Guess I should clean the skimmer all out and maybe then it will work???? Anyone ever have this problem??

you cant put stress coat in your tank cause thats what will happen. i dont think it really helps the fish at all anyway. just use ro water. but your skimmer will def go nuts if you use stress coat.
and i have a question for you, i may get a g3, how deep can u keep the water in your sump with that skimmer? the water in my sump is 10"deep would i need to make a stand for it?

Thanks for your reply - I'm learning a lot - even if it takes me months to find the answer to something. I don't think 10" would be a problem. I'm having problems keeping my overflow syphon running at full capacity so as a result my sump is always very low, but I've had it over half full before. (30 gallon tote container) I just got my G3 working too - shucks.

Stress coat is primarily comprised of protein, that's why your skimmer goes nuts when you put it in your tank, you are putting a huge protein load on the skimmer.

I've found through that the skimmer runs very well, roughly 2-4" above the elbow that connects the skimmer to the pump.....This is a rough guideline and I've found that each skimmer is totally different, and you might have to play with the water depth a bit, to find the sweet spot.....

Ok, now that I know the stress coat is affecting the skimmer - how do I fix it? I have the skimmer out of the sump and empty. Is there anything I can do? As long as the stress-coat is in the water theres not much I can do then to correct it? A big water change would work I guess. Any ideas?

You could run it in some plain water just to clean it out and try to remove the residue that way.......You could also just put it back into service and do a water change as you suggested.
