I have found a HOB w/skimmer built in it on ---- for around $80. I'm always about bargains, especially in this day in age.

It looks like Joe's pics are missing again. I should have him email them to me so I have hard copies to post.

I would avoid a filter/skimmer combo. Spend a little more money on a quality skimmer. A good skimmer is worth it's weight in gold. Check out the nano forum for skimmer recommendations for your tank size.

Awesome! I'm glad you showed me that. I will definately be doing an HOB for sure! So should I buy a overflow filter and convert it to a refugium or just build one from scratch? Either that or buyu the one that suctions to the inside of the tank.

Awesome! Ok so I asked a friend from work about a refugium and he had mentioned "mud"....do I HAVE to use mud or can I grow macro algae with just regular substrate and live rock????
there is a companies which sells various muds. The idea is to get some nutrients in the substrated alone with various critters also.
With caulerpa having "hold fasts" they would use the mud for anchors. But chaeto can just tumble around.
If you are going in tank just use whatever substrate you already have there.
Sands can be good for external refugiums with just old play sand acceptable for macros.
From what I understand "mud" or other substrates rich in nutrients are desirable or needed for true sea grasses like turtle grass. But I have not used turtle grass or the muds.
Live sand is IMHO not needed to control nitrates for instance. The main nitrate/phosphate consumers IMHO is the macros themselves.
just my .02

IMHO???? So your also saying that I can go buy play sand and substitute it for the live sand I would buy at a pet store?

Cool find, Henry. That's a lot better guide to modding the filter than the link I sent him. I saved that one for future use.

On the thirty gallon I would go for the Aquaclear 110, the larger one. Investigate it a bit to get the sizes as it hangs on the tank and you will need to make sure you have enough room to hang it on the back. You want in this case to add water volume to the tank as well as have enough room to put your heater in it and some macro algaes.

Thanx Spanko. So I have one more question for anyone who has an answer...........Should I thoroughly rinse the substrate after I buy it before putting in tank?
Thank you

IMO you should purchase dry Aragonite substrate in the size you want and thoroughly rinse it before putting it in the tank. I would be careful with the play sand thing. Too many variables there IMO. Go for the known to be good stuff, Aragonite.

Sorry bud but this is a question that shows some lack of up front reading on your part. There are guidelines that should be followed in setting up a saltwater tank. Go up to the top of this forum and read some of the information there to get a better understanding of what is going to happen as you introduce water, rock and substrate to your tank and how to monitor it.
