skimmer and/or filter???

Hi,
Is it possible to be able to run a tank on just a protein skimmer without a regular filter. I have a topfin 30 filter, and am interested in purchasing a protein skimmer, but i wanted to know if i could run just the skimmer and not the filter

Yes it is. Actually, the preferred method of filtration in the hobby today is to use 1-2 lbs. of live rock per gallon for bio-logical filtration, and a protein skimmer to remove waste from the water.
Would you use a hang-on-back skimmer or an in-sump skimmer?
