I know the ASM are good skimmers.....That is my 2nd choice behind the Barrs Beckett skimmer......just weighing my opinions here.....Still leaning towards the Beckett due to raw stripping power
Can you run the ASM externally? I'm not a big fan on running a skimmer in sump that is another draw back for me as well, but love the 2 pump setup. Is there any mods to make this skimmer a recirc like the Euros?

You know my answer! :D
My Beckett skimmer (I'm the second owner of a MRC-inspired DIY skimmer) has worked very well for me. The skimmate is wetter than what I used to pull when I used needle-wheel skimmers on old systems (Euro Reef, Turboflotor). The skimmate is also slightly nastier than what my old AquaC EV-180 was able to pull (that was my favorite skimmer until I fired the Beckett up). Plus, the Iwaki MD55RLT that runs the skimmer only uses 180W (only SLIGHTLY more electricty than a comparable needle-wheel skimmer would use).
And you can't go wrong with Barr; the updated skimmer design (twist locking flanges, airflow meters, and bubble dispersion plates) seems to be about the best out there.

.....tell u the truth the craziest skimmer i ever seen was a beckett.. it was BIG!!!! 6' tall and had dual injectors... the thing was just plain SICK!!!! it was a recurculating beckett at that... only thing w/ becketts injector types is the $$ it cost.... phhh im not saying a asm or euro is cheap but ...... you get what u pay for.. (well in most cases)
hey robchuck... how would u compare a tf1000 to a euro... is the euro worth the $$ in it's performance compared to a tf1000/??
acrylic.. now i think about it.. think u aught to go beckett... i never heard of a unsatisfied beckett owner....
and how come u r buying 1 and not making ???

I think RobChuck summed it up pretty much when saying the becketts produce good skimmate and electrical consumption isn't bad either......It kinda made me laugh when I read that and hear all the needlewheel guys say becketts use tons of electricity, but when you think about it a properly sized skimmer for the tank would run 2 or 3 smaller pumps and even with a needlewheel recir....would probably used just as much electricity if not more than 1 bigger pump!!!!!!!!!
I've been always partial to the Beckett and Barrs' is at the top of the list.....His design and features are incredible......I've heard Euros service is lacking at times (alot) and when I look at the Euro and then the price tag just seems way over priced, and would opt for ASM before a Euro.....Geo's are very nice skimmers as well....Waiting for Golfish to give us some updates on the Geo recirc.....he talked about a while back.......I might have to bug him about it though.......
I have considered MRC as well, but the deciding factor so far is the features and the biggest so far is the air flow meters, which I think are a real plus which would help in tuning and maintenance on the skimmer as well......Plus with Barrs' your not paying extra for ozone port as with MRC you will.....It's basically like buying a car, where can I get what I want for a reasonable price and yes Becketts are expensive, but they are no more expensive than a Euro Reef and feel would do a better skimming job and handle more water volume....Deltec, H&S, Bubble Kings are way expensive.....IMO a rich mans' toy

Why tinkering "trying" to build a skimmer when you can get a top notch beckett with the bugs worked out of??? Sometimes it's just not worth the DIY

ahh ic ic.. it just seem to be cheaper (maybe if u got ir right the 1st time) to build 1.. i mean for $300 or so.. u can get all the materials and build a skimmer 2x bigger.... i mean how much do it cost for 10'' dia by 5' tube ??? $200?? (guessing) and then a sheet of 1/4'' to cap and what-nots.. i dont know about u but that sound like a monster of a skimmer..... i mean.. a skimmer is a simple thing.. all it is making bubles.. and thats the aero foamer ( bekett injector) inself.. just need a housing for it w/ a air valve (since it's the airvalve that controle the size of the bubles) and a pump to blast it through.. and a needle wheele skimmer is even easier.. heck.. it's just a aline built into the inlet of a needle wheele pump.... (thats y i kinda wonder how my tf1000 is compared to a asm or euro cuzz they are perdy much the same thing... well same concept but in dif housing and name... and most definatly price)

George is working on it right now..He's not using his standard Gen X pump on this skimmer so it wont just hang on the side of the reaction chamber. I think he's going to have build some kind of mounting bracket. I hope to have it in hand in a few weeks.

Did you check the Geo thread at --? Did you see that 12" model with 3x Gen X pumps? :scared:
I think Geo and Barr's do this stuff on the side so its not like they have people working for em. Andy (MRC) is doing it full time so you get things a little faster. Eric at Fragfarmers fired up a huge MRC dual head with Seqeunce Barracude a few months ago..I got to say, its a hec of s skimmer.

No Mark I didn't check out -- yet.....but I had the impression Barrs' was done on the side, but very good though IMO......The MRC is very impressive as well....I was thinking Barrs dual becket with the Barracuda or Hammerhead pump......More than enough pump for the duals though....I bet it was impressive

I'm just guessing Barr's makes skimmers and stuff as a second job, kind of like Geo does :notsure: I've read nothing but GOOD things about his skimmer. I know Andy's made it a full time + business. I think it I were to run a dual Beckets I'd opt for the Hammerhead.
That MCR skimmer that Eric is running is very impressive. I've been asking Andy for years to send me a skimmer so I can do a comparison but he just wont bite :) I did get him to make me a custom Kalk reactor tho :)
