skimmer overloading

My venturi protein skimmer capture cup needs to be emptied at least twice a day. Is this normal for a new skimmer? I've been told this happens with new skimmers, is this correct? its been running for 10 days, my ammonia levels have just dropped to zero yesterday.

Sounds like you are taking on too much of the tank water with little or no protein. If the cup is not fillling with a green/brown smelly protein soloution then it is tank water. Turn back on the intake flow and let it sit that way for a few days. You should see the brown foam slowly creeping out if it is protein

the water/foam in the skimmer capture cup is mostly clear with a bit of a brown tinge to it sometmes. I suppose it will become dirtier as the cycle near completion? I have turned the intake to the lowest level. thanks for your help.
