I'm 7 days into my cycle.
I turned my skimmer on just to see if it would do anything.
and it filled the cup up about three times in an hour and a half
i turned it back off because it wouldn't stop, is this normal?

You turned it off because it was doing it's job?
Let the cup fill up. There will always be foam filling in there, don't worry each time you see foam, just wait until it's full, you'll be able to tell when.
What kind of PS is it?

I turned it off because I can't stand by my tank 24/7 and dump out the cup so it doesnt overflow.

What brand skimmer are you running? The same thing happened with me when I decided to fine tune mine (HOB Odyssea pro pak). A little more fine tuning, and away it went. Right now I'm battling tiny bubbles in the tank, but I have a feeling that's got something to do with the slight temperature change. My tank was at 78 degrees a couple of weeks ago, and I've finally got it stabilzed at 82 degrees as of today. I'll keep an eye on it, and see what happens.
Good luck with your skimmer...best equipment in a saltwater tank, IMO.

It should not fill up three times in an hour in a half. That is just ridiculous.
My guess is yours is filling up with a liquid that looks like very dilute tea... or maybe even clear water. My guess is that the skimmer is set up incorrectly or defective.
Make sure that if the skimmer is a hang-on submergable type that you have the water level at the proper place. Also make sure you don't have the bubbles turned on too high during the first week or so. It takes skimmers awhile to break in and a high bubble flow could make the cup fill up with clean water.
Reread the setup instructions, doublecheck everything, turn the bubbles/waterflow down. Give it a week to break in. If it still does this then take it back.

Like Mud said it shouldn't have filled up 3 times in an hour and a half!!!!!! What was the color of the water in the collection cup??? What do you have in the tank at this time....Do you have LR and such??? You don't have to run the skimmer during the cycle, and doubt if the tank really has much to skim yet and skimmate will probably be light tea color at that

some skimers take a day to break in, i just got the new supper skimer and it took a few days to get running with out air to just cycle, and i was a little mad at first but sometimes sicence is not exact.. go over the directions, maybe reduce the amount of air/water intake, and it should work out. If not go to a LFS and see one in use and find out what they did to set it up.
