skimmer question

how do you tell when your skimmer is set right? I read my manual word for word twice and all I got from it was (screw the venturi air valve all the way down, then open it up 3/4-1 1/2 turns depending on pump location and water level. I have a seaclone 100 placed in the sump of my wet/dry filter. I've ajusted several times and still can't get it to skim properly. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

It depends on your preference of skimmate. For a wet skimmate, the waterlevel in the riser tube should be a few inches below the collection cup. For a drier skimmate - several inches below.
I run an ETS skimmer and keep the waterlevel about 20 inches below the collection cup.

If the air is to low then the riser tube will get gunked all up if you adjust it to much you will fill cup with more water then gunk. You have to fine happy medium to where you dont get to much or not enough.If the cup fills with light green and not dark green then air flow is to much.Hope this helps

it takes at least a week for a skimmer to break in before it properly works

So are you saying that the lower the collection cup is placed below the water line in the resevoir, the dryer the skimmate? Please clarify.

Does anyone know if the Seaclone (100, 150) brand of hang-on skimmers is very good? if not, can anyone recommend one?

I dont know about that brand, but I bought the AquaC Remora based on emphatic opinions here about it. It is great! My tank is still cycling and this sucker is already pulling up very light skimmate. Very impressive.
