what would be a good skimmer for a 80 gal???would the octopus bh800 work good?
The 800S would work well BUT, it has some drawbacks in my opinion. It has an awesome pump but it overpowers the skimmer body. I solved this by drilling two holes between the reaction chamber and the first chamber. Now the skimmer acts like a recirculation skimmer. This slows the flow of the skimmer eliminating all micro bubbles.
Since I drilled the two holes I have replaced the needle wheel impeller with a mesh impeller and it really brought the skimmer to life.
After saying all this the skimmer will work out of the box but it can be a little touchy and there may be some micro bubbles.
The manufacture has asked me about this modification and they are considering making a change to the skimmer to include this from the factory.
Another good choice is the 300F. It has two internal pumps and does a great job. The pumps are not as good as the 800S pump but they are common and cheap to replace if needed.
