Skimmer Question

No I leave it running pretty much all of the time

I dont. some people do. if anything is going to be shut down or cut back it should be circulation pumps. unless you have a HOB that sucks up all the food I see no reason to do so. sump skimmers even less so. most skimmers tend to lose their foam head and not function for a short period during and after feeding anyway.

so why not turn it off to advoid this?

Probably the simplest answer is that turning it off will also cause it to lose its foam head...
The only time I turn my skimmer off is for cleaning and when I add pods to the sump of one of my tanks without a refugium.
