Skimmer question

Is there a problem putting a skimmer that is overrated for your tank? I am redoing my tank and I am looking for an in sump skimmer. In the future I will be building a in wall unit in my basement around a 200gal. I was wondering if I bought a skimmer that is rated for a 200gal if it would cause a problem if I used it on my 46bowfront for now, Just trying to think ahead and not spend money twice if I don't have to.

shouldn't be a problem that i know of after all skimmers only remove junk that is there to be removed--if it fits in your tank and the flow rate isn't too looney i say do it. some people think it's possible to 'overskim' a tank--i'm not one of those people :D

I had always heard that the skimmer size ratings are not sufficient and you should go with one rated at least twice what your tank is on the high end. In otherwords if you have 90 gallon tank, go for a skimmer that has a rating something like 75-180 gallons.

I was kind of looking at a Kent Nautilus TE, but I have just started researching them. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a in sump skimmer that will work on up to a 200gal tank that doesn't cost too much. I am also looking at some DIY skimmer plans, my husband is very good at those kind of things I would do a DIY if I thought they would work as well.
Thanks guys.
